Rawan Rajab, a young entrepreneur from Kafr al-Labad village in Tulkarm Governorate, West Bank who was able to break discriminatory norms in her community.

Rawan Rajab (22 years), holds a BA degree in design and applied arts, and the owner of the “Blue stone” business for recycling glass to produce building blocks stone for home decorations.

Rawan had a creative idea to recycle and produce blocks for interior decorations, due to the economic hardships she and her family suffered as a result of COVIS-19. She thought about the project for two years, while discussing it with her family. She has the support of her father and family.

She says, "I launched the idea of my business and I am aware of the society's barriers and the frustrating view that I will face, but I had a strong will with my idea, especially since I, like the rest of the young men and women in Palestine, have no other ways to work, and I started a business that is environmentally friendly and established a small factory next to my house. Through participating in workshops within the project “Breaking discriminatory norms” with PWWSD, a space was created for me to express myself and my challenges by breaking the norms. The discussions we had at a community level has changed the perceptions of people around me to accept the professions and work that I chose.

She adds: “after the workshops, I promoted my business and idea through my meetings with members of the community and relevant institutions, and since I started from my small village, Kafr al-Libad, and since I live in a male-dominated society, I face a difference in opinions and comments on my work as a woman. I have been involved in several projects that supported my business, today I am hiring six new employees in the field of design, marketing and production.

“The name of my business “Blue Stone” suggests creativity and strength because its main message is for the environment and for social change, that is why I have dedicated it to the colour Blue.
